View Full Version : LCD Screens
I'm sure that this must've been discussed before but I missed it. I'm considering buying a 17 inch or 19 inch LCD screen but am concerned about the latency issues. Is it really as bad a people say.
The thing is if they say that a LCD screen has a 20 ms delay does is mean that a CRT screen has none? If in fact a CRT screen has a 10 ms delay, it is not really that bad.
Finally if my ping to the server is 50 and my screen latency is 30 will it actually feel like I'm playing with an 80 ping?

yo xor,
Best to ask Cata, as he did a lot of research and stuff a few weeks backn on LCD screens.
I gave him some links to the Dell monitors, which rate very very high.
Probably best to search google, and check toms and other review sites on GAMING lcd's, as they are very nice nowdays, and do not have the inherent problems that plauged lcd's a few years back.
check this post :

My 17" has a 12ms response time and looks great for gaming.
The higher the response time, the more blurry things will look when (for example) you swing around fast in an FPS.
I would aim for something 16ms or lower. The 'motion blur' effect is still slightly noticable on a 16ms display though.
Yes I was just about to say that Shrimp :P You get LCD monitors with 12 ms Delay. But as I tell everyone, CRT for the moment is still better. One day if there is a 1 Second Delay I'll get it :P
& I'm not sure, but last time I checked CRT monitors had no delay...

2k! You'll be lucky if you wring R20 out of Legacy.
I have ordered the Dell 19 inch (the 2005 model). According to the Anandtech reviews, it is great for gaming. According to the Anandtech forums it absolutely sucks for gaming and most people are swopping theirs for the Dell 20 inch. I might end up using it just for DVD's and I'll keep gaming on my CRT.
They say that when you convert from CRT to LCD, the ghosting will be noticeable initially but your tolerance increases quickly and you then game comfortably. LCD's are apparently absolute magic with games like Dawn of War.
Does anybody know the brand CMV? You can buy them locally and they claim 8ms response times on their 17" panel.
One more thing about LCDs - they are absolutely brilliantly 100% crystal clear and awesomely sharp and crisp.
My games all look like I've turned on some secret super high detail level. Everything also stand out a helluva lot. I can just about reach into my screen and touch the game envinronment :). Looks especially awesome on CTF-Maul ;).
I also want a LCD, lekker light :).

ye, just like an LG , I've also been looking an LCD, but not for gaming, i've seen games played on lcd, its not there yet.

crt time delay is the time it takes an electron to get from the electron gun to the glass (not messurable in miliseconds).

I just changed to LCD and got a cheap one 17" with 10 ms response and I definately cant feel any lag.
And hey, i paid less for it than my 19" normal monitor, and you basically have the same size screen as 19" normal monitor because you have a clear picture up to the sides, whereas even on a flatron (or what they are called) i feel it gets blurry at the sides so you end up with a smaller picture.

I'm on holiday in the Cape at the moment so I'm neglecting my guinea pig duties a bit. I'll give allyoucaneat one hell of a run when I get back (and after recovering from the wine estate visits!)
The results of my allyoucaneat experience is rather moot, I guess, since they should have doubled their price now.
The Dell screen should be waiting for me when I get there, and I'll post my impressions of it once I've put it through its paces.
I do have this nagging feeling that one should still wait a couple of months before going LCD.
well, i got my wife a second hand 17" samsung lcd screen, gonna get some good nookie for it :P

Cata, I hear you about the few months story. But one thing I learnt when buying my graphics card....You have to eventually jump in the water.
People are always telling you "In a few months NEW technology is coming out" So then you wait, just about to buy this new tech, when ppl say "nooooo, wait a few months MORE and a NEWER model is coming out" etc etc, sometime you just have to buy, do the research and get good stuff :)
And Camel, stop treating your wife like a hoooker, buying her stuff to get sex out of her, i mean no other married man does that *Haja checks wallet to see what he can get tonight from his wife* :)

You guys are approaching this the wrong way...
Rather upgrade regularly with "older" technology, than once in a blue moon with the newest stuff. That saves you lots of money.
Because the newest stuff that comes straight from the labs is usually not that much better than the models before, but twice as expensive, ie. you pay extra bucks just for being on the newest level, not for the technology itself.
Waiting a few months till (for example) the newest graphics card comes out IS WORTH IT, but only if you then buy the model that got replaced by this new technology.....
right ? :D
thats the right approach enima ;)
Not just China zyron. I saw one the other day myself ;P
