Hitscan aim 101

Hehe, to continue with my 101 spamming (hey at least it keeps the boards alive), how do you aim with the lightning, shock rifle primary and sniper? We have some incredible snipers in the community!

1. Track the enemy with your crosshair and shoot when you have the 'lock', so to speak.

2. Keep the crosshair still and strafe into the enemy (or let them move into your sights).

3. Reflex aim. Aim slightly off the target and then flick-shoot to get the hit.


Personally I find the 1st way near impossible. I'm just not good enough to do it.

The strafe and shoot (nr2) way helped my aim improve recently and still the most reliable way for me.
The third way is possibly the most potent, and your raw aimers usually get that right with deadly accuracy.

I would say I incorporate about a 90% nr2 and 10% nr3.

There is a 4th way to do it. Wait with your crosshair when you know he is gonna jump/walk there and click when you please

Most of my shots are aimed-move my mouse to track, otherwise flick or instinct shots.

I do n.3, all my shots, i dont aim, i spray and pray :P

I mostly strafe left, and pull the mouse right across my target with nr3 combined. or vice versa. sometimes move either backwards or forwards at the same time, with a jump here and there (ut99 days)

But doubt i'm good at that anymore :(

2. I use this most of the time.
3. Occasionally I'll get a lucky shot like this. Mostly I miss though :D.

To use numbers, I'm probably be like 80% 2, and 20% 3.

I can sometimes get #1 right if the target makes a long/high jump.

I'm also curious on if/how people use the zoom feature of the lighting gun?

1: Almost always with shock, u get the "lock" when its reloading. Just last weekend i got 7/8 shocks in a row like this (on lan of course). I also do it when my oponent is unsuspecting and a line up a nice lg on him. Elco is actually king when it comes to this, its like all he ever does...

2: Never, shoot when u can is my philosophy. This is prolly why i suck at CS. Alot of quake3 players use this technique, Destroyer for instance.

i would put it down to 50/50 between 1 and 3

And i never use zoom, one player i saw that uses zoom quite effectively is struma tho. i was quite impressed when i saw him play at a TA lan years back. I just never find the time to use it.

Probaby about 60% when i use shock. Always seem to be able to "snipe" better with the shock than the LG for some weird reason.

2. Keep the crosshair still and strafe into the enemy (or let them move into your sights).
Use this mainly for my LG and sniper rifle, i get about 80% of the aim by using the mouse and then the last 20% of the aim (once I am near the enemies body) i use the strafe.

3. Reflex aim. Aim slightly off the target and then flick-shoot to get the hit.
Sometimes do it by luck, but mostly by the time I press the fire button he has gone around the corner, and is halfway across the map.

You know, all of those methods rock but Gamos you really need a forth option:

Yep that's me 100%, and I am sure all people that have seen me play Arena can back me up on this. I can't even hit a guy walking in a straight line for 3 sec, where I have the time to put the crosshair nice and square on him, but on the click, poof I ALWAYS MISS!

Naut, once you reach a certain level of expertise, you become like one of those chinese kung-fu master. You are above mere mortal, some 'higher force' is all you need :)

However,You do range from needle-pin-over-100-meters to wide-side-of-a-barn-is-too-small in range :)

It seems the mood of the gods affect your aim. :P

I believe it is looking at a player model and shooting at the wall. Just a little trick us non-pros use. :)

The more I have been playing, the more I have come to rely on the higher force or "inner aiming device". The more I consciously try to hit someone at all costs, the more I miss.

So, when I try too hard or get angry my accuracy evaporates. When I just completely relax, MUUUUUUCH better.

It quite often happens that I quickly get into the lead in a FFA game with my score coming to 7 or 8 within a minute or two - then I hit a dry spell where I cannot stay alive or kill anyone and I end second last with a total of 12 frags or so. %$#$% *slobber* :(

I have noticed, expecially on CTF-Maul, that I can hit a moving target easier with the LG if I am also moving and (glo dit of nie) a stationary target is obviously easier to hit when I'm also standing still. :P
