View Full Version : Weapon efficiency
Hey guys - thought I would open a forum to talk about the different weapons.
I wanna know what everyone uses the shield gun mostly for. I've noticed some use it as complete beserkness, others are smart to use it as a trap, and others to do amazing jumps.
But do you have any other amazing uses for the shield gun! I mean - its these useless weapons that sometimes have the most amazing uses!!!
On starting up which would you prefer the assault or shield gun!
Well, anything that takes away from your health is a big no no, so shield jumping is out. The only real reason to use it, is to protect yourself when odds are against you and yes, I would think it to be the better option to spawn with.
The problem most users make is to start running and gunning with the assault rifle. Most users will back away when they see a user with a shield, but when a new spawn start shooting at me, I'll shoot back.
In CTF is can be used as a nice trap through those teleporters.
Shield jumping has it's uses tho. Take Gitzzz vs burnie at ESWC last year, burnie shield jumps up from rocket to shock on ironic to catch gitzzz by suprise and kill him. I did a similar thing vs mburr(i think?) at this years ESWC qualifiers, works like a charm.
there's also a nifty trick u can do to get from flak to 50a on rankin without losing too much hp. Very nice if sum1 is whoring lg up there. I got haja a nice one on rankin the other day, shield jumping from the platform just in front of the elevator on rankin to the ramp on the other side of the shock by the vials. Lets not forget the jump from 100a into the tunnel above it as well, very nice jump, takes some practise tho.
I used to whore shield back in ut2003 days so much so that my dmg output was minimal and my game was poor vs the better players. Nowadays i barely use it at all unless I'm under 70hp and staring down the barrel of a charged lg :P
This gun is what sets ut2004 apart from other fps's, just like the stake gun does in painkiller. If they would just take the bugs out it would be >>>> as opposed to ">>"
I'm speaking from 1v1 experiance here, I assume u would use shield alot more in tdm's and especially in ctf.

Falling damage can be shielded with it as well as lava etc
You can also pretend to do a shield-jump, so that the opponent hears you doing a 'jump', but you don't actually complete the jump. The opponent will then (hopefully) think that you're no longer where you were and will try and go around to find you.
An example would be the 100a area on Roughinery. If you're trapped in there with the opponent outside, you can pretend to do a shield jump at a certain point, he'll then try and get around the side to try intercept you. When he does that (if you're quick enough), you can quickly move to the other exit and do a real jump there.
Another example of fooling with the 'jump' would be the 100a on Rankin. As long as the opponent can't see you, of course. You would obviously use it depending on where he is.
You gave away the roughinery trick! Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo..............
:D
Most (not all) those tricks can be done with just clever jumping, without damage done. It is much more usefull in Duels however, and much less in TDMs.
Ah - these are interesting but useful tips! Which brings me to the next gun - the assault/enforcer(s) rifle.
I have some good points and bad points for this gun.
Firstly - I find - the Grenades are wonderful - but they are so unpredictable if you miss or throw to hard. Sometimes - even bouncing right back at you and well - you know booooom! Secondly - it's range is really terrible - so unless your target is not to far away - it ain't gonna do damage - and usually the other dude has a better weapon. So unles their health is low - its pretty useless!
So people - like my previous question - should you choose this weapon when you spawn - how do you best use it - or do you have any other super tricks with this gun?

The assault rifle is a joke, and should NOT BE USED (unless you know ho to throw the little bastard grenades around properly)
Gimme enforcers anyday.
Hehe Flux - I think I have thrown one or two your way - and I must compliment - you catch very well!
But yeah - it takes practice - in fact when my Clan practices, sometimes - we put on the Arena Mod with Assault rifles only and have internal comps where you are only allowed to throw grenades at each other - its really good at judging aim and power of the the thrown grenade - also helps in terms of aiming for the bio and the flak guns.

imo it has its uses. 1 trick to using nades is to spam them around a map when u run past choke points where he might come thru, and u can hear ur opponent if they dmg him.
u can also use it when the guy is really low and u know it, usually pro's can judge an opponents hp to a single hitpoint. for instance i use it often if i hit sum1 with 2 shocks off spawn and he's left with 10hp cause 45 + 45 = 90 duh, and since the assault rifle does +-6 dmg per shot u can finish him off pretty quickly. u can try the same after u hit sum1 with an lg off spawn, this is of course if u dont have link or mini.
When it comes to nade throwing I'm anything but pro, i think i hit 1 direct nade out of about 10 games. Then again i watch demo's of SK and fnatic going head to head in a 4v4 on goliath and they can hit nades from miles away, so maybe i just suck ;)

ok - I hear you! I must say - its a fairly a nice weapon to start off with though <me thinks>
ok ok - so the two basic weapons aren't really that awesome however they are very usefull - but - who has the best use for the bio rifle - my favourite is plastering a cealing full of goo and watching it drip and drop onto unsuspecting players heads :)

Its much better to do a fully charged direct hit..... It does 220 hps!
Also if you are being chased and you want to stop the guy following, just lay a trail of goo behind you as you go (i.e run backwards and shoot), each globule does 30 hp which is really quite goo....d :D

Actually, hardly any of them can be done with clever jumping :P
lol - Smart usage of the weapons counts the most I think - depends on how well you can predict your opponents next action. Jumping is just a form of "flying" as I call it to be unpredictable or to get to places using clever movements.
Yeah -- spamming grenades in a tight corridor can work -- I've mananged to kill 4 people on a CTF map that way once - since you generally know where they're heading when they have the flag.
And you can also use the assult rifle as a decoy to lure people in and then switch to a "real" weapon - since they think you don't have any... Now -- If I could just hit them when they're in my trap I'd be winning :)

What I sometimes do is lob grenades in a room where there's lots a players having war. My unsuspecting Grenades, usually get me a frag or two.
What's also usefull is to throw the Enforcer into a team mate - so that he can have double enforcers when no weapon is around.
Bio Rifle has a cool trick - if you and your team mates shoot the same blob in an area (like a teleport) where you are expecting someone to teleport to - it keeps the blob alive and big, and it keeps spreading around the area - very nice to guarentee a frag. This is one of my favourite uses of the Bio rifle amongst other tricks I have picked up with it.

u think of that urself btw? cause i didn't think of that till i saw a SK demo a while back, very clever indeed. :) My only excuse is that i hardly ever play tdm :P
These are some really awesome tips guys, keep it comming ;)

I find the assault rifle very very inacurate, but it scored me more kills than I can count, especially after you lose a tight fight and know the enemy is low on health. Those grenades are great for spamming, but I never even tried to 'learn' to use them. :)

I play with weapons hidden so it's not always possible to know when I have double Assault rifles :(
Shield gun is also important for assisting the flag carrier to make his getaway, especially if you don't have much ordinance (or accuracy) yourself. Get between him and the pursuers and take eeeeeeeet for da team.
I also use the shield gun in onslaught against those pesky spider mines.

TDM wise:
Shield is the most important weapon for me. Never get involved in a direct firefight: shield up and fuck off, then attack from flank. Players are typically low on health in a TDM, so the link secondary is also potent. Otherwise, just the usual shock and LG.
Grenades for the win if you're Mielie. And it's worthwhile being good with the assault - often it's all you'll have.
-bsk
Grenades are very potent. Some guy hit me with 3 grenades in a row tonight..owned me one time.

I had the biggest laugh the other night on Campgrounds where I saw some people fighting it out on the rocket launcher platform. I popped 3 nades into the room, since all I had was the assault pee-shooter. I was delighted to see TheProven jump on the first one, dodge onto the second one and get thrown onto the 3rd one. D_E_D. :D
Hey zero - actually Acid and I were in a sticky situation on a LAN - and Acid ran out of ammo - so I thought I would give him my enforcer - and it clicked to us that it also enabled double enforcers for him - was quite handy! :)
Ok ok - so moving along - tips for the link gun - other than joining up all together and some real close up bursts of fire - who has good uses for this gun?
