My sig is a quote from David Hume, a famous 18th century philosopher.
Concerning your question, up and down are relative terms.
If you stand on your head, what was once up becomes down. Same as if you turn around 180, what was once right is now left.
Direction is relative to the observer, however the forces governing the observed are not.
eg. Gravity always acts, it just depends on the way in which you perceive it. It could act down for you, or up (if you`re on your head), it could exert a smaller force if you`re in space etc.
In summation:
Directions and co-ordinate systems may be social conventions (they don`t need to be). The physical system its describing is not a social convention.
My sig is a quote from David Humes book, 'A Natural History of Religion'. Its really quite cool.

Had an awesome long weekend from wednesday evening. Slept 18 hours a day and had 6 meals everyday. Was barely awake long enough to ingest sufficient food and wine.
Hmm, loaded and configured Windows 2000 server. Bored.
