Just a quick note that the qualifying period for the 2nd Onslaught Ladder is ending this Sunday, 12/06/2005.

I've added a few matches to the Calendar for those who still need a few games.

Hey Xan,

While we are on the topic of ONS, explain to me what happened to the dedicated ONS server.

I got a bit miff last night when someone (sorry I forgot who I spoke to now) proclaimed that it was lame to leave when ONS gets voted and then promptly added - 'We play their gametypes'

I guess I would propably also get agitated if the server empties everytime CTF gets voted...

I'm really not trying to start a fight here, but I am guessing the dynamics between TDM/CTF and ONS is different enough to deter people just looking for a quick game (me included) and then the server empties.

We should really have a dedicated ONS server IMO.

We do, but everyone insists on using the main sgs for ONS.

the first place to look for a game, is on a server with ppl on it.
because all the game types gets played on one server, it's easier to vote for
them when ur all there, instead of disconnecting and reconnecting on anoter server,
just to continue playing...i'm lazy, the extra clicking tires me out faster :P

The dedicated ONS server is there, but it doesn't see much use. When the servers aren't packed you'll see people vote ONS on the main server because there's a higher probability of having a large game. If the ONS guys were to go to the ONS server they'd lose those folks who tag along with whatever gametype is played. As you know, ONS is a lot more fun with a large group. Call it "fishing for ONS players" ;).

If you want to get rid of the ONS players on the main server (or stop the gametype being voted there), simply remove it from the list of voteable gametypes.

EDIT: Forgot to add that the ONS and Mod boxes are sometimes a bit wonky. The main server's ONS performance is more reliable and consistent.

Look, I am trying to walk in your shoes here, and if I imagine CTF dissapearing from the votelist (for instance), it would not sit well with me either. I guess the 'fish for players' rings true.

Mmmm, fair enough. I guess I just have to conform to the majority and start figuring out how to fly that damn manta. I am sure Xan Kriegor is turning in his grave right about now. :)

I honestly wouldn't mind if ONS was removed from the main server. 99.9% of the people will still congregate there (the 0.1% is me ;)), so there's no danger of cutting down the size of DM/TDM/CTF games.

CONFORM! ;)

Unfortunately ONS seems to be the gametype that's the most difficult to just jump in and have fun with. The combat isn't as close quarters as DM and CTF, and I think that doesn't do any favours to those looking for some quick, in-your-face action.

Given the small size of our UT community there will always be bitching for more ONS players. :)

You know, it is not so much Torlan that puts me off. When the demo got released, I actually loved ONS (Torlan being the demo map). It is those absolutely huge maps that drags out the game and put me off so much that I actually don't even feel like playing the smaller maps any longer either.

Players not quite 'getting' the rules are a tremendous furstration too. Those same players are the ones just voting along when ONS gets voted. :P

Catch22 huh? :)

Catch22 huh? :)

LOL, indeed.

One solution to the nasty marathon games problem (happens especially in 1-3-1 maps like Arctic Stronghold) is to put the alternative node setups on the servers. Last time I heard, there were problems enabling those. Maybe an admin can check it out again? I think it'll go a long way towards revitalising ONS.

new node setups for the win....:P
maybe we cant test the stuff on sum1's personal ut server,
to test for possible crash bugs, b4 they go through all the trouble
of getting it on the ons server @ sgs....just a thought... dunno if it could work.

sorta like an online simulation of the real server...

I'm willing to host a server on my connection to guinea pig the alternate node setups and BONUS VEHICLES!!!! :D

Now that sounds grand. Get those other vechicles in there and fewer nodes!

Laaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaag on the other servers forces the use of the only non-laggy SGS server that can be used for ONS :P.

non-laggy SGS server

Now there's an oxymoron if I've ever heard one. :D

... and BONUS VEHICLES!!!!

I despise the ECE vehicles. I was disappointed to hear that Epic will include them in UT2k7.

I just want new node setups!

When UT2K4 was released I loved ONS. I then played TV and saw how a proper game with vehicles should be played. Now why I can't, stand ONS and can play TV, I dunno. Oh and I can play ONS, I know the rules and the game, and I can play it pretty well. I just don't like it. Why? I dunno. Another game type that I used to like was UTXMP. Had vehicles and I played that game pretty well. However UT2K4 got released and that was the end of that mod. Quiet frankly it's a vote. If majority votes it then it's the game type the majority wants to play. Personaly I leave the server(not that my absence would be missed) :)

My main gripe with Ons is that with the 20 or 15 minutes for 1 round it can take in theory more than a hour for 1 game and in general more than half in hour for 1 map to finish. I get bored quickly and don't mind playing 1 ONS in between but 2 in a row tend to put me to sleep.

I now that in ctf the default time is 20 min but if a game lasts 20 min its usually a tight one and the adr really pumps on those.
