Has anyone made the switch?
I see you can now buy XP64 from computersonly and buycomputers, or you switch free of charge on the Microsoft website, if you have XP Pro 32 bit.

It still a bit new Cat and drivers available are in BETA stage,
so if you really after a stable system wait a bit.
And it has been proven that there is no real advantage in gaming on 64 bit OS.
When programs are written in 64 bit ......yes there will be an advantage but for now not.
But it your call.
my 2 cents

100% Correct Whoop ass, wait till the professional review companies take it apart and it is benched by reputable organisations.
No, from what I hear its great. Get it and tell us all about it :D
it sucks. give it 6 months and maybe. But imo x64 will never be a gaming OS... Just like win2000...

Of course its a frikken gaming OS. Only difference apart from its backward compatibility (w/ 32bit software) is thats its written in 64bit.
Even if performance is right on par with 32bit software, at least you will benefit from future games and general software written in 64bits.
I'm doing the switch soon
there is no such thing as a "gaming OS"
Gotta agree with Karnaugh here. You want a gaming OS..... go get an Xbox.
Ok my God, Gaming ‘friendly’ then...
I just mean that solely 64Bit app's (Applications that are only written for 64, and are not available for 32) are not going to be out for a while, never mind actual games. Sure there will be the various small 64 bit tweaks like Farcry has, but nothing monumental for a while. As x64 stands now it's for specialized software that 99% of us are not going to use. Until then x64 is just starting to bridge the changeover from 32 to 64. It's only there if you need it. I tried it, most games wouldn’t work, some didn’t even detect what OS I was using and refused to install. As I said maybe in a few months drivers will be optimized and patches for the 100 other problems released but until then it's a no go for me.
And I’m not just saying this shit and buying my 3200+ for the hell of it. I wanted x64 to work and was damn disappointed when I ran into so many problems.
Just try it before you chant heresy, and you'll see what I mean.

According to Microsoft, 64 bit will only be in full swing in 2007, and 32 bit will be phased out after 2007.
Ok my God, Gaming ‘friendly’ then...
I havn't had any trouble playing anything on Windows 2003... cant get much less desktop orriented than that.
I had some trouble with my ati card and win 64 bit if you got a nvidia card I would say give it a try.Seems they are doing a bit more dev on the 64 bit drivers atm ati lacking slightly behind. It had default microsoft drivers for my card but I wanted the lastest drivers to work.
It took 4 hours of googling and registry hacks and driver hacks to get it working .I would realy recomend waiting abit loger it you are running a ati gfx rest of the drivers sound and lan and stuff seemed to work fine .
I have installed x64 Edition in a dual boot configuration with standard WinXP Pro.
You do notice a slight difference in performance within Windows itself, but obviously this isn't an effective test.
The main problem I found, at the moment, is the lack of driver support for many devices. Although, I must say, the Nvidia Nforce4 64bit drivers are nice =). My hardware firewall actually works now... and the sound drivers have better functionality/tweaking options.
At the moment there is no real benefit in running x64 until more 64bit software is released and there is more driver support.

Spot on! My Installation lasted a full 4 hours and then I switched back to 32-bit

I think that he implied that @ the mo, there are 32-bit AND 64-bit so he can still go cheap, whereas in 2007 there will be ONLY 64-bit, so (like me) he's screwed, rofl. Just a thort :D
Hopefully I'll b employed full-time by then...
