Well, a friend of mine has got UT2004, oke only plays offline though (no inet)... anyhow...

When he tries to install the game, it copies a few files then gives a CRC error on

J:\System\XEffects.u (J being CD drive)

So I'm wondering - Would it be possible for me to create a cd for him, with only the XEffects file replaced with a working copy. The cd should/might still work for copy protection purposes, but I'm sure if it does not, I can get him some kind of crack or whatever to run it.

Problem now is: Where would I find this file? Would someone here be kind enough to host it somehow, or maybe mail it to me? (4mb file)

I could probably try to search P2P networks for the file, but I really don't feel like downloading an ENTIRE cd image just to get one file fixed :p

Erm Lazy me ... did a quick google on 'XEffects.u' and one of the results seems to offer exactly what I'm looking for. Just the file, alone, as a download.

Busy downloading, but should work just fine.

All went well, but one file is still busted ... I don't know WTF this guy does with his discs...

Textures\AlleriaArchitecture.utx.uz2 -> 50mb compressed file still doesn't work - the rest I could uncompress with tinyuz2, or copy, so I assume they'll work.

Haven't been able to find it yet :/ Gonna try searching P2P a bit later...

erm, i make backup disks of most of my games for just such occations. u can use ur disc 1 if u make him a copy, once he installs one of the patches he wont need cracks to run the game it has a no-cd in it all ready

Hehe, problem is/was that I never did get UT2k4 (long time no online gaming...) so didn't have any CD's.

Well, problem was solved in the end.

2 files were damaged: The second one copies fine off the cd, but when you try to uncompress it, it fails. Reason: a small bit (less than 128kb) was damaged.

YAY for the 'legal' bits of P2P. And only needed to download the missing 128kb from the 48mb file :)

So I just have to write him a replacement CD1 and CD2 (replacing relevant files), and no more probs. Was suprised to find that after patches no CD is required :) Original CD might still have worked, as long as THAT file wasn't checked...

Installed it simply by copying everything onto HDD and unzipping (with tinyuz2) the uz2 files. Then just entered registry settings with some regcheck tool I downloaded. Worked a charm :)

Kinda miss the UT days :) Damn rusty though...

What patches is needed though? I had all 6 downloaded, but in the last one (3355) it says, that 3355 includes all changes from the previous versions. It also mentions some Epic bonus pack, that should be installed BEFORE 3355. There a listing on here somewhere?

(Excuse the ignorance/laziness, haven't kept track of UT in ages)
