View Full Version : So the same 20 okes will play UT3?
Saix is dead, PH has tumble weeds blowing, and even UZA barely whispers the words UT3. Is this just the silence before the storm, or has UT3 been shifted to the back because of the plethora of other Xmas releases. There is Crysis, Quakewars, Mass Effect, Assasin's Creed, Halo, Team Fortress 2 and even Epic's own Gears PC.
How Bizarre. I get the feeling the same 20 okes will play, bitch, and QQ once again with no hopes for a bigger playerbase. How is a troll supposed to feed? I am hungry.
That said, reviews are pinning it at 8's and 9's across the board, with Gamerankings reflecting that with a 85%.

Gamos, what you need to ask yourself is.....how often are you wrong? not alot I would say, o Prophet of doom :)

How Bizarre.
I think that's a clue. It's quite odd to have player numbers drop for both the current version of a game and the demo of it's impending replacement. One would figure that the community would either go one way or split. Since that hasn't happened, there's hope. :)

There are such awesome titles out now that the competition is really hectic. Hopefully UT3 will outlive those games and become relatively popular at some point. It's clear though that it will never reach the level of activity CS, BF, TF2 and some of the other games enjoy, especially in S.A.... I'm going to get it regardless, so if the other 3 S.A. UT3 players are out there let me know, maybe we can see who can do the best feign death stunts off a cliff. :P
Well, it is perhaps a little early to start forecasting doom, however it's not looking too bright.
I think a game as "plain" as UT is going to get a little lost between all these other much more "exciting" seeming games. When there are galaxies to explore, ancient kingdoms to roam, and lush island jungles to shoot the crap out of, running around in a loop in a broken down factory hoping to time an armour correctly doesn't quite measure up to the other games being released at the moment.
However, I'm sure after this surge of leet new (most aren't even sequels!) games dies down, UT will still be there.
Everyone is playing COD 4!!!!

I thought everyone was playing TF2.... or is that old-school now? :D
Prophet of Doom. I like it! Still not as good as Bridge Troll though. :)
But seriously, I spoke to a couple of guys online about UT3, and the excitement just isn't there, and neither do I have any. Even international forums speak with bleh about it. If you love UT99/2004, you'd no doubt love UT3. But the competition this year is really stiff, unlike the mid-March release of 2k4. Even the review at IGN state that "If you didn't like UT before, there is nothing here to convince you otherwise, but UT fans will love it" paraphrasing.
Perhaps longevity will be the trump card, but they deserve a bloody kick in the ass for not adding the much talked about Warfare mode in the demo.
As it is though, UT3 is a hard sell for me, when I have to budget for games over Xmas. Mass Effect I want. Assasin's Creed I want. Crysis I want. Bioshock I want (yes, I am running behind), but UT3 I'll get when the budget allows. I swallowed up the UT2004 demo back in the day, but perhaps the comfort of my bridge just became too nice, or perhaps UT3 just isn't the aphrodisiac it used to be.

No ways, I loved ut2k4, still play it, but I really dont like the ut3 demo and definately will not buy the game if it doesn't turn out alot better than the demo. I think lots of people think this way..

I LOVED UT99, i didnt like UT2003/4 much tho. Hopefully UT3 is based on UT99. :)
Well with no dodge jumping it's a big step closer to UT99 than UT2003/4. Oh and some weapons are similar too.

Maybe Epic should start shipping UT3 with all the new graphics cards and mobo's coming out? I wonder if this will be the last Unreal Tournament, and if not, will the next one go back to UT2004 style play?
UT's past, present and future:
1) UT1/UT99 - Build for multi-player fun through complete mayhem. Spammy guns and little funnies such as feign death. Very popular even though online multiplayer games are still very small scale. Considered un-pro by Q3 players.
2) UT2003 - Supposedly made for Pro competition, only 10 guys end up playing it.
3) UT2004 - Brings in vehicles, more guys enjoy it. Pro's complain it's not pro enough, UT99'rs complain it's not UT99 enough, but at least its still semi popular.
4) UT3 - Goes back to basics... sort off. Tries to keep UT99'rs happy but also tries to draw in new players with simplistic play style. Many UT2K4'rs hate it, many UT99'rs hate it. Rest of world doesn't even notice the game.
5) It's the year 2013, no flying cars yet. UT4 brings in all kinds of new graphics innovations, everything now looks super real and even better physics. Only 3 people buy it, the rest is playing BF2454 (Space Edition). Apparently UT4 is not UT99/UT2K4/UT3 enough and it's Deatmatch mode apparently is getting boring.

I will defiantly buy UT3, coz I am a huge Fan.
But I recently got a few new games from the lan on the weekend.
I got bioshock, the witcher, COD 4 (F**ken awesome, I love it), crysis (very nice game), NFS pro street (a fun game to waste time), PES2008 (best football game EVER!!!!!!!!! everyone should get it) and fear combat.
And I didn't finish Half-life 2 episode 2, still busy with hellgate london.
So many games so little time, i wish I didn't have to work for 3 months...
But as soon as my line is fixed expect me on the SERVER!!!! ;)

UT3 is too far off from UT2K4 im afraid. Its a completely new FPS. Weapons are similiar, maps way different and movement just feels wrong.
I dont like it :\
Simply put, South Africa does not have the player base for all these new games! That is why some games overseas like QuackWars have full servers, while in SA the game died after 2 months.
Crysis is a omf awesome MP experience, but give it 2-3 months and people will abandon it, just not-enough-players!
You do however get die hards, I'm a UT and BF die-hard, and this community will forever continue to just plod along sloth-like, having its 45 minutes of fame four times a week, before going into a slumber till the following week.
I like ut3 (the demo) - its got the right pace and feel. Its very much like ut99. The demo server has probably died down - since the map has been overplayed. Bring some variety and a proper voting system and the numbers will be back.
Hey if the 15 okes playing ut3 are the okes I am thinking of- That sounds like a damn fine way to be using up bandwidth and pulling off a few headshots.
There are bound to be some fresh clan matches.

UT2004 is dead, long live UT2004!
roll on UT3
Well not that my opinion counts much, but the feeling I have with UT3 is the same feeling I had with UT2003.
It just felt wrong from the word go.
Unreal1 was very cool, then UT1/99 came out which exploded for everyone and things were just right, hell even the demo we played to death :)
When UT2003 came out it was a disaster but we played it although it sucked.
UT2004 came out in the nick of time and that felt right, everything was in place and everything worked the way its supposed too.
Now UT3 is out and it feels all wrong, a little like UT99, a lot like UT2003 and a very little UT2004.
Everyone here will buy it and try it and play it, then move on to something else.
Unless Epic have a genie in a bottle somewhere, UT as we have known it is over. :(

I'm also holding out for this. It's been way too long since I had a good clan match. :(

UT99 had the advantage of being released just as online FPS gaming started to gain momentum. Now that everything has been seen and done before it's difficult for a new game to bring that same feeling. I really wish it wasn't though. It's great to be part of such a tidal wave. :)
I gave UT3 a chance, but find it more mainstream noob the more i play it. I find myself not using any tactics, any caution, any variety....just going for any easy kill whilst hoping i dont get spammed or eaten by a mini gun. Could play UT2004 for hours on end, but not this....braincells desire alot more.

I can't get UT99 to run for some reason.
I'm sure there'll be enuogh people to play UT3 with over the coming months and years. It's just one of those genres that attracts die hards.
Everyone likes to have a game that doesn't take a lot of time to log on and play, and that's exactly what UT is.
That said, I haven't even budgeted for it this year. Apart from spending on a lot of other rl things that I want, there are a lot of really great games out there atm.

Damn, and I was hoping that UT4 will be an MMO. Frag people for XP and use you cash to buy weapons and stuff ... ah well.

No, that will only come with Unreal Tournament 2021 (they decide to go back to the year based naming convention).

I am upgrading atm (monster laptop) as my pc died with the UT3 demo, it just chooned; 'ok, that was your last re-boot.'
UT was my 1st game ever and I played it solid for like years, my sons are playing UT atm and dad just offers advice here and there :) (it took 7 years to convince my wife..) cause it's one game that if u play well u can be devastating in other FPS games. My entire PC and gaming learning curve was all because of UT. There is no other FPS game that will ever imbue the insane reaction times, clan match pressure, concentration and fast action that is UT. Sadly only a few will appreciate the ultimate FPS game, Zyron is right about the player numbers...
Having 'flown the nest' and played CSS and 2142, I am looking fwd to Crysis (the demo blew me away) COD is not too shabby either except it becomes a nadefest with more than 10 players.
So ya UT and Crysis it will be for the next few years.

I played UT2k4 on the weekend at the LAN I went to. And damn it was fun, pawned them shitless!!!!!!!
COD4 is also fun mplayer. Especially when you get to call in the helicopter :).
It would be fun to Lan hellgate:london.
Like, why play some buggy beta demo when the full release is creeping up on you any second.
P.s. I am not claiming the full version isn't buggy.
I tried the demo of hellgate London - for me - it sucks
Basically - kill bots - add skills/weapons - kill more bots
If you are good at aiming in fps - suddenly your aim is gone ?
The character customisation is cool.
Ok well UT3 single player aint bad got some sort of a story going for it.
but me being utk4 fan I was never really in it for the single player.
As for those other leet games they all really do look good and most play well.
They dont last they have there 15 minutes then something else prettier and hyped comes along.
Nothing beats loading up UT joining a server and FRagginG!
Now when is the thing going to be released locally so we can get some real servers going I am tired of killing bots oh and Sip ( he is noob)

Another 11 days, not long now. :D
UT3 two steps back and none forward...not impressed....let see the final release and decide from there
I agree with what a lot of peeps here have said, it might look amazing, but UT3 just felt wrong from the first time I tried it. The more I played it the more I had to force myself to play more than one game in a row. Unlike 2k4 where I HAD to get the full-version as soon as I could, with UT3 I just couldn't be bothered. Unless they've made some big changes I'm going to give it a miss. As sad as that is, I'm not going to play a game I don't enjoy, and I just don't enjoy UT3.
(so please fix the full version)
Man like only reason im like not playing and stuff is simply because i had to make sacrifices to play the game. i have gotten myself a job fulltime just so i can get Cash to upgrade my PC to Pwn in this world called UT3...
Im sure theres some noobs that feels this way aswell, but i must say this is so not good for my Micro adn stuff...
No biggy, in due tim eill totaly pwn every one.. under one Tag.. as i alwasy did...
See ya Peeps Next year!

I hope ut3 ain't as bad as it's sounding here, I was looking forward to it. But I'll make sure to play it before I buy it.

Even if I had the game I wouldn't be able to play, 9 weeks later and my phone line is fixed, but the dsl is still not working. THANKSTELKOM!@!!
And I think I-burst would just suck for ut3, I tried tf2 the other day and the ping was kind of low (25 - 60) but it still felt laggy as hell.

Thing about UT3 that REALLY pisses me the fuck off, is the fact that it's exactly UT99, but on a new engine. I mean, why take away the LG and bring back the KAK sniper poef rifle?
Same goes for the impact hammer vs. shield gun, as well as taking away dodge jumping...
So like Cirius said, 2 steps backward and none forward...
Imagine UT2k4 type gameplay on this AWESOME engine...
But still, I'm amped for UT3 non the less... just would've like to see a new game instead of UT99 with a new engine. :p

Mutators can fix all of that, once everything gets going with the servers, hopefully we will be able to vote things like that in. (really really hope so)
Im pretty sure someone out there will be making a lightning gun and dodge jump mutator.
Sniper has a tracer. Shield gun made for get ahead, camp and win, gameplay. Double dodge has effed up the entire franchise's scale since inception. It was a kak idea.
Those are changes I actually prefer.
