The Unreal World
I'm looking at a level from the next Unreal Tournament game, and it's not pretty. In a darkened conference room at Epic Games' North Carolina offices, lead designer Steve Polge, lead level designer Jim Brown, and producer Jeff Morris are walking me through a level that appears to be made of the equivalent of digital cement blocks -- and gently explaining to me why this is a good thing.

Halleluja! It sounds like they are actually working on maps the correct way this time!

Considering the number of games whose pretty faces hide less-than-stellar gameplay, Epic's plan sounds refreshing: build each level without any art, use those level shells to hone gameplay, and then when every hallway, ramp, and jump is doing exactly what it should to deliver perfect gameplay, "stick the pretty stuff on top of it."

Surprising:
"Actually, we don't think 2K4 was very successful," Steve offers. Jim and Jeff nod their heads in agreement, while I'm certain mine is spinning in disbelief. Steve continues, "It wasn't a bad game...I just wish it had been a better game than it was."

Seems even Epic reckons UT2003 was rubbish:
"The original Unreal Tournament was on the threshold of being a great game," Steve says. "If we had done 2K4 without having to feel kind of in the box of what we had started in 2K3, I think it would have been a much better game than it was. We think there's a lot we can improve. This is a completely new game, new engine. All the code is really being rewritten. No assets from UT2K4 appear in here again. In fact, in terms of how the games have evolved, this is more of a leap, I would say, than the original Unreal Tournament to UT2K4."

All I can say is - Bring on UT2006!

Seems it's probably going to be UT2007 ;)

Wow, the ideas behind single player voice comms also sound amazing. If they do indeed call it UT2007, is it safe to assume a late 2006 release?

Apparently not 2007. Brother told me next UT is def next year, read sumwhere (in print, not unreliable online mumbo)

Print is reliable? Hehehehe, about as much as online mumbo. :) You don't really get better info than from epic themselves, and they say it is more than a year away.

Do I read some veiled comments about Melee fighting? Maybe Unreal Championships 2- esque?

1. Damn those graphics look amazing, but I mean will we ever ACTUALLY see that on our pc's? And if so, will we have to SLI 2 SLI's together to get that performance?

2. Sorry leg, i was joking, no offence intended :(

You know Macera, I really don't understand how you could think that. Please explain to me how you could possibly form any opinion on a game more than a year away, without even completed maps.

The mind boggles!

Here are my thoughts about what I've read so far:

- It all sounds very interesting and I'm looking forward to the next UT.
- It's definitely to early to decide whether this game is going to be good or not, I believe it will be good since Epic definitely got back onto the right track with UT2004.
- I do hope that its "different" to UT2004 however, again, not because UT2004 isn't an excellent game, it's just that UT2004 will still be around and people will probably keep on playing it even after UT2007 is released, unless of course, UT2007 is da bomb!!!!
- They are "tuning" down the jumpiness in UT2007 and changing it to be more close combat than UT2004. Is this a bad thing? I used to enjoy the close combat in UT99. Lets see how it works, if it doesn't, mutators will fix it.
- Some people won't like it and will move on to other games, but new people will join the UT crowd. UT is definitely here to stay for another couple of years, which makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside.
