Hey guys,

DAMN!!! I finally got to writing and passing my DAMN Learners License exam today... got 100%... lol... teh first time they failed by with one damn mark...

I was wondering if you guys who do have licenses/learners, at what age did you get yours? I must admit, I never really saw the need for one coz my parents always allowed me to drive without anything, till I decided, skrew this... it sux stressing all the time...

So now I'm 21 and I finally have my damn Learners... and if all goes well... I'll make an appointment for my license this week and try and pass that in Feb! :D

Then all I need is a car!

Anyhoo... this is a silly thread... I know... :tounge:

Cheers!

Got my learner's on my 18th birthday and six months later I was driving legit. :D
I would have got them both as soon as possible but I failed my learner's once.

Passed my driver's first time with flying colours :D

I got my FIRST learners when i was 17, second try. I failed the first time cos i didn't study, at all. So i passed second shot (bike learners) and then got a bike. Then i wrote the bike off a few months later and went for my Car learners, which i got first try, without studying at all ;) Then i got another bike, and then wrote that bike off too. Then i went for my Car learners and passed it first try, now i'm driving a car :D

Got my learners round 21 or so also. Had mates who drove everywhere, plus, I didn;t want to get a licence, as it would mean I would have to drive when we went out jolling :P

Passed my licence few months later 1st time, and been driving ever since (almost 10 years :( )

i got my learner at 17 i think.
I could drive but never got my liecense till after school (19), just before my leaners expired.
I have had 3 crashes so far, none too serious. 1st 2 cos I was stoopid, and niave and the last cos bakkie drivers are stoopid(well worse then that actually my language is not strong enuff to discibe them)

My worst accident was when I drove my Dad's car round a corner and into the back of some old lady's carwhile she sat and waited for her gate to open before she went into the driveway! Me seocnd worst was when I swerved to miss a taxi that stopped in the middle of nowhere and I hit the car in the other lane!

Had a few since then but none so bad :)

Learner's at 17 on 2nd go, actual driver's I passed easily on first go when I just turned 18 with only 2 lesson's behind my name :) That was now almost 7 years back.

My flatemate (25) STILL hasn't got her licence -- been trying recently, failed twice already without making it out of the parking section! She had over 20 lessons now, and spent many thousands! Plus I've taken her on plenty un-official lessons, but no more -- my poor heart can't take it.

2 accidents so far - both long ago. One was completely my fault (and the car's -- shoddy breaks), I was looking out the window at the mountains or something and didn't see a car in-front of me brake to turn into another lane.

Other one more serious, not my fault. Was pissing with rain on N2, taxi stops dead in front of me in the fast lane, I somehow manage to stop about a meter before I hit taxi. 2nd taxi behind me, no lights, doesn't manage so well, and hits me hard from behind. I get pushed up against 1st taxi. Meanwhile taxi no3 behind taxi no2 hits him, and then on to me again. Car completely written off with car's back smashed up against my front driver's seat. Fortunately I'm absolutely fine - just a tiny bit of whiplash :)

Eisch... CrazyBob... didn't know you were that old dude... you look like you're like 21 or summin dude! :P Anyhow, shot for replying to my silly thread... Eventhough I only got my learners now, I've been driving for like 6 years allready... I to made a boo-boo with my dad's car when I was in Matric, we were at a Party... I was gonna sleep there, so my dad said it's fine... then a Litre of Brandy later... I got in an arguement with a girl, got pissed off and wanted to go home... so through out the course of the evening, some idiot climbed over the gate, breaking the sensor of the gate that keeps it from closing is something passes through the gate... I reversed... I bit fast I suppose, and then... WHAM... the gate hits me on the left front door! Now being in an not so sobre state, instead of just stopping there, I drop the clutch and scratch the rest of the left front and breaking off the cars mirror, which as luck would have it, was the one that has the thermometer in it to take measure the temperature and so on! :( Anyhow, went home... slept like 2 ours... woke up and thought!!! OMG!!! My dad is gonna kill me... he was out of town for the weekend. SO... the phone call: Me: "Hi dad... I had a F#$% UP!... the car was damaged a bit last night!" My Dad: "@#$%#@$^ $^$&%^*&^&^$#^@ @%#@$&^&^ #$^%@# IDIOT!!! $#W%^$#^$ ^$% ^$% $# " (Puts the phone down in my ear) I was in such a stressed out state, I actually took some antidepressants! :P Thankfully my dad phoned back later, and then said it's kewl... he can understand what happend, and that he'll tell the insurance that he was driving! :P Anyhow, if been in a few other accidents, in friends' cars, not myself, but nothing major! :P

driving since 91 (legally) and never made or been in an accident - touch wood

got me learners at 17 and just after I turned 18 the drivers (both first time) - k555 or what the fook ever just came into being and I remember it as being stressful and like a mountain that loomed ... once you get the license it was like a huge preassure off

I always recomend getting it done and done quickly - like a trip to the dentist

ROFL.... typical Capetonian. :)

But yeah, Dad's can be cool. I crashed my Dad's car about 5 times (only one kind of my fault) and the rest of the family's cars about 10 times. Didn't crash my car even once! :P

But through it all, my dad would get bent, then we'd talk it out and then we'd be cool again. :)

Dude, I'm so never getting in a car with you -- at least not one your family owns :P

So true that, War]-[ead take heed :)

I dunno why I love talking about cars so much, as I really don't care about them that much ...but to go off on a tangent -- how about we see all your car histories. Could be interesting...

Charade '86 --> Stopped making it up hills :P
Reno 9 '88 --> It's french.
Citi Golf 1800 '89 --> Totalled! Damn taxi's.
Golf 3 GS '95 --> Had to sell, went to NZ :( Awesome car.
Toyota Corona '85 --> Bought because it was cheaper than plane ticket!
Nissan NX '91 --> The most fun I've had in a car, with the awesomest digital readouts. Sold because g/f couldn't drive a manual :(
Nissan Primera '92 --> Not too bad for an auto, just a bit of a lemon.
Citi Golf '97 --> Fun, but shit. Bought cash 'cause I couldn't get finance straight away when returning to SA.

And in a couple month's time -> Polo Playa 1600 ~'01

Oh, and if wondering why none of them are new (besides not caring about cars that much), I'm very against finance, and prefer to buy stuff cash :)

got my learners at 18 right after highschool, that expired. Got my learners a second time, it expired, got my 3rd learners... and decided to get my drivers. Got my drivers licence on the second attempt. On the mng before my first drivers i had to swop the car i was used to driving for a tazz ;p The stupid handbrake cable broke on the mazda i was driving...

I finally got my licence at 24... thats almost 4 yrs ago now. Never had any problems in terms of accidents thankfully.

inherited a datsun 1200 from my grandmother - sweet ride but didn't last long - took it long distance in my army days and she just wasn't up to it - year model escapes me for sum reason :P

bought a 84 Golf and she rawked - cost R8000 at the time a virtual fortune (bough it 1996)

then bought a the Toyota Tazz 1300 brand new in 2000 - then when gallovanting acroos the globe and only returned in 2005

and now the proud owner of a Toyota Yaris 2006

wot can I say - toyota drives beautifully

and that is the extend of my automotive history - fairly boring as such events go

Hmm, while we all listing cars.....

1. 1st car, 1.3 Opel Kadett (brothers old car) - sold to friend

2. 2nd car - 1.6 Opel Kadett (moms old car :P) - Stolen (with R30 000 sounds system and mags that I had for 2 months but kept paying off for a further 22 months, yay)

3. 3rd Car - Nissan 280 zx - Wonderfully fast car, 2.8L straight 6, rear wheel drive, could slide around corners NICELY. - Traded in

4. 4th Car - Opel Astra 1.6L - Gave it to wife

5. 5th Car - Jumbo Golf - Immaculate conidition, got from other borther, sold it with 350 000 km on the clock, engine never used a drop of oil and was never opened our touched (more than I can say for opels, they go like the clappers, but break just as fast)

6. 6th Car - Opel Boss - Super modified, ground up restoration, not one panel is std (no door handles, hand made back lights, back bumper, wheel arches over back wheel (instead of straight across) and too much opther stuff to mention)
Still have car as my second project car, fun in the garage :P

7. 7th Car - Renault Megane (and current car). Bought it as a code 3, fixed it, and had an 80k car in the road for 35k :)

Also had a Jaguar XJ6 when I was about 15, but after working on it for a year, realised it had 2 petrol tanks for a reason, and sold it, before I got bankrupt.
Recently sold my 1959 Wolsely too, on / off project car for about 8 years now, kept on running out of money / time and just got fed up. Also revently sold my 1965 BSA Bantam motorbike, same as Wolsely, more of a money drain than anything.

And thas all folk (for now:P) Trying to muster up enough money to buy a 1960's american Muslce car, or a 2 door 1940's american car to mod up.

Ye Crazybob, my botoher is a car fanatic, he has over 15 cars currently, and must have owend well over 60 cars in his life so far.
(currently he has from Ferrari's (GTO like Magnums) to Jaguar E-type V12 Roadster, to Aston Martins, to Lambourghini Espada's etc etc, he even has a 1930 Le France, converted from a Fire engine (chassis shortened and no body, except for a seat and petrol tank, with a 14L straight 6 engine. The crazy English race these beleive it not, and are extrmely rare (sell for over 500k :( )
So I guess growing up with these kind of influences rubs off on you eventually

The XJ6's are amazing cars, great engines (although thirsty) and amazing suspension (there is a reason it is highly sought after by kit cars, like the AC Cobra).
You can get them for about 10-15 k for a really good example nowdays (stretch to 25k and you will even get a fully kitted and modded one with a v8 engine, prob 6L :P)

Opels are really, really good cars. Yes, the build quality inside is not great (the famous - when you buy an Opel, you get a rattle free - saying). But their engine (when it is not bellowing out copious amounts of smoke) really go nicely. PLus, IMHO, the kadett shape, once modded, is a really, really nice shape. I will post a pic of my Opel Boss when I get home :) And do not laugh at my 'mags' I am saving up for the ones I want, and unless you have 10k to give me, then shut up :P

Well, my car history is exceedingly boring.

I wanted a beetle ever since I was a kid, so when I turned 18, I got one. Damn nice one too!

Eventually my parents took it away from me (they literally had to pry it form my clenched fists) and bribed me with a new Opel Corse lite (apparently they think beetles are not reliable enough.)

Still got that Corsa now after three years. Goes well IMO, but not as understated as a refurbished VW beetle. :P

Chances of that happening, is about the same as me beating Nautil1an!:crazy::rofl:

my car history is very interesting, my dad is a lancia fanatic...
So i have been exposed to old cars all my life. My dad has been racing since he was about 21, and i am starting soon been a few times but i need the cash first.

I have owned a few cars already:

first car Ford 1.6 laser old crap car learnt to drive in it sold it after 2 months of learning when i got my license.

Second 1972 LANCIA Fulvia 1.3s - Really awesome car great fun to drive very responsive and handels like a dream just lacking in power.

Third car 1982 LANCIA Beta 1.6 - nice car for around town and general driving but also great to throw around on the track slightly heavy though

I really want a Lancia integrale one day my dad has one and it is amazing 18 years old and still one of the quickest cars in it engine range, a dream around corners

no sheeet WHG, but the mags I want cost over 10k, and justifying them is pretty hard for a car you drvie once a month (thing is about 80mm off the ground, so not an ideal every day car, if I see a speedhump i either crab over it at 45° or reverse :P)

Sneaky, it is not unbeleivably fast, it has the std engine, but it goes pretty well, I have tweaked it slightly here and there, but nothing extreme, and being an opel it holds the road well. Lets just say it looks alot faster than it goes :P

I really love cars, but i am too poor. If i was not I would be like u Haja or ur brother.

Friend of mine had a 2000 Impreza GT, 212KW and all that. Awesome car, the new impreza's just don't have the kick that the old ones had.

Sure the Focus is FWD, but the handling on that car is absolutely insane from what I've seen. I'll be driving one tomorrow though. The focus just seems like a more rounded car, as far as comfort, ride handling and performance go. The ST is actually quicker than a WRX.

The ST is actually quicker than a WRX.
Maby on paper.
Stats of thse cars will never turely represent reality. U would prolly have to be a very good driver to get an st to beat a WRX on straight or corners, whereas the WRX driver would have an easeir, and imo funner ride.:)

Bottom line. I am envious.
Have with with what ever you decide, cos both are simile making cars.

hehe kief, i got my learners at 17, and i got my license a month after my 18th bday.

Had a 1300 Golf 1 95 model, then mod it a bit, replaced the 1300 engine with an 1800 engine, replaced the standard carb with a weber dcd 36,installed an 288billet cam, and some viper branches, with a nice 56mil freeflow, and replaced the standard gearbox with a 5speed limited slip box, well it ducked off:P, gave it to my brother, and he just made an accident with it few weeks ago :( here are some photos of her :) http://www.showyourcar.za.net/golf4.html

now im driving a 2005 (new shape) polo 1.9tdi sportline, 6speed,coupe, awesome car, very fast for a diesel, friend's A3 2L Turbo, cant get away, robot to robot :) and very light on Juice, get about 1000km to a tank, for the performance u get in this car, it cant compare to any other petrol car on the same fuel usage :P got a quotation from Chip Logic, to chip it, it brings her up from 96kw, 315nm torque, to a nice 122kw and 360nm torque, still deciding... :P
