OK, advice needed here.

First of let me explain the situation, we are a publishing company with a web development department. We currently have a 256 diginet line with about 37 staff in the company.
Not all of the staff uses the internet at the same time but there is a lot of activity on the line so my download speed sometimes reaches a high of 5kb/s LOL.

So now the boss assigned an adsl noob to order a better service for us, so he called in IS, is suggested 2 x 512 lines Telkom screwed up as usual and now we are only getting 1 x 1024 line.

We have been waiting on our line for nearly 6 months. Also bare in mind that we as a web dev company needs lot of speed.

Question 1
Will the 1024 line be sufficient for a company with 37 staff members?

Question 2
If not, what would be a better solution? And where can I find more information about this.

Question 3
Is it normal for a business to wait 6 months for ADSL

Many thanks in advance; all advice will be greatly appreciated.

1. Actually, the 1mb lines are now 4mb currently....so ye a "1mb" line is better than 2 512 lines

2. duno

3. yes, my dads business took about 4-5months, my friends business about 5 months and still counting :)

thank for your input, so help me understand this better.

1mb line = 4mb?

Actualy that depends. 2x512K lines is 1024/512 and 1x1024K line is 4096/256.

But IS won't give you 4096K speeds anyway, and barely 1024K either.

Also it's easier to balance load over two lines than over 1024K.

cool thanks man, but i not convinced that 37 people can benefit for a 1024 line, will have to wait and see, anyone here have a 1024 line? And how is it running?

Ok here is my calculation, please correct me if I’m wrong

I have a 512 line at home my dl speed is a max of 55kb/s, so if I multiply 55kb/s x 2 I get 110kb/s

110kb/s / 37 = 2.97kb/s per user…

Is this true?

I assume you're talking about installing a 1024Kb IS business ADSL? If you can't make it work for 40 people you should consider a career in garbage disposal...... due to the massive size of our company's network we have certain branches doing everything (mail, apps and surfing) on a 512KB line with a 140 users in the branch... It's all about access control and usage policies to make a network sucessfull. Oh and a lot of prayer that Telkom won't fuck anything up at anytime.

and your above question is pointless you're not going to have 40 constant connection streams for each user.... have rules on your mail server, limit p2p applications, streaming and excessive dowlnloads during office hours and you'll be fine.

On avarage you can download 2GB per 12 hours on IS ADSL it's allot of data

Keep in mind that the 4mbit line hardly ever performs at it's rated speed during the day, more like a 1mbit line. Only in the evenings will you perhaps get your 4mbits.

Probably best to keep that 256 diginet for redundancy if possible - ADSL can be rather crappy at times.

And as Hellboy points out, you're not gonna have all 37 people maxing out the network constantly and you'll need to set rules and limits.
