This is somewhat an exclusive by yours truely who got to hear it :D
Neotel are deploying all fixed lines. International transit with VSNL Intl and Teleglobe gives Neotel a wide range of direct connections to other telecommunications. Throught Teleglobe, Neotel are a share holder of SAT-3 SAFE cable.
They are offering infrastructure on a wide scope of mediums. They have a national network and are connected to the international network of Teleglobe. The national network will be switched on within the next few months. They own and lease a large amount of fibre not only in South Africa but to all over the world, this is done by the various partners such as Teleglobe and Tyco giving them connections to 68 global points of presence.
They have international connectivity services avaliable currently from Jo'burg. They are busy lighting their national fibre network, consisting of an 8000KM backbone and metropolitin networks. They will be offering services by December this year, consciously starting at the top end of the market by providing wholesale services first.
For last mile access they have many plans, these ARE Wireline and Wireless (not just wireless) plans. They are not willing to speak alot about these yet though. Their network will ne "2nd generation" delivery all voice and data services over an IP switched network. Current deployment of core services has milestones of December this year and March next year. After which they will start releasing end user centric services.
The major cities targeted for first roll out are Joburg, Durban and CapeTown.. These sub links are being deployed on multiple 2.5Gbps and 10Gbps connections.
They are commited to being more than a government operator, and are focusing on making a real difference to the South African telecomunications market.
Apparently if you make an international call right now on your cellphone there is a high chance it's using their network.
