Guys.

Since I've upgraded my machine, my DVD-Writer's been acting a fool. When I copy things off a disc or even worse, burn one, it tends to go fast enough, but my machine is otherwise inoperable. As a result, my burns are 50/50, because the burning goes well enough (mostly), but its with the verification that the fun starts. Just for the record, I used the white Verbatim discs when testing. Out of 10, I got a paltry score of 1 successful disc (so far) :(

Anyone else's machines go slow when copying from discs or burning? I even updated my fimware, which didn't help me really.

I've got one of those stupid OEM Sahara drives since the beginning of last year, no problems until I had to transplant it and two IDE harddrives into my new system. Also, I have a SATA drive now, so its the 2xIDE HDs, 1xIDE DVD-RW and 1xSATA. The writer detects as DVDRW IDE 16X if that helps any.

I've got an nForce4 board, NF4XK8MC ( I think that's the code ). The IDE drivers for the nForce boards are dodgy at best, or so say the masses (and me) because when installed, it doesn't allow me to read all my discs. Thus, I have teh default Windows drivers but that causes my Windows loadtime to increase a moerse lot. I've heard about the 6.70 chipset drivers, haven't tried them but am a bit skeptical.

Any help is zooper appreciated.

What powersupply are you running? I have the LG dvd writer combo drive and it runs purrrfect, burning a full dvd in 10 - 12 minutes

hmm, i had the same problem once.

I think I fixed it by re-installing nero, had a dodgy copy of it. Other than that, I really cant remeber. I do not think it is PSU related, as it would normally reset the pc or do something more obvious if it were the PSU (I thin).

Perhaps try installing the copy of nero, its a long shot, but i seem to remeber it helped for me.

just for the record - when I burn cd's I have no problems but burning dvd's does tend to lag everything - so I just let it do its thing, goes quick enough

I've worked out what it is. Anyone ever heard of drives defaulting to PIO despite your best intentions? This is the problem I now have on my hands. I've read much literature and articles and I've eventually managed to force it to UDMA 4 (which seems normal), but it doesn't want to read any media inserted in it.

Snake, are you sure the drive isn't borked?

The only other thing I can think of is your IDE cable - make sure it's not kinked or damaged. It is an Ultra DMA (80-conductor) cable, right?

I'm starting to believe that more and more, since I've burned DVD-RWs all morning to test, but I've tried a regular writable now and the Buffer Level's jumping like crazy (which it wasn't doing with the RWs). Ja, both my IDE's are 80-conductors because it doesn't give that "No 80 Conductor in Secondary Channel" message (or however else it goes).

Anyone know when BluRay's coming out? :P

if u say so

Please explain to me how that posting will help me solve the problem I'm having? I just can't seem to figure out how that fits into this thread. Must probably just be me.

You know, its weird snake, when I first got my gigabyte *spit vomit* dvd writer, it used to kill nearly every cd i threw at it.

Then I changed media ( I was using R20 Verbatim at the time, was long ago, and that was the price of "cheap" dvd's). But since I changed media, it never killed one. I also try and stick to -R's as they seem to be less fussy and play in more dvd players (although the newer range of dvd players seem alot more forgiving than the older ones, guess they made to play copied media).

Anyhoo, I wiould suggest maybe trying to swop media, or try -R's (if you havent allready).

Funny you mention that, Haja. The pack of 10 DV...erm coasters I have, are all DVD+Rs. Fancy that, eh? Well, I've gotten two to function out of the bunch at least, but I've bought two blanks today, specifically one +R and one -R just to test.

Thanks for the tip

I've popped in two old CD-ROM drives and I can watch media while copying off those drives without lagging, so yes, as Lord_Xan so eloquently pointed out, the drive is "borked" :P

Both CD-ROM drives pick up in DMA mode and copy well enough (for such prehistoric technologial devices) whereas after the DVD-RW is forced to DMA, it just lags the whole machine.

Thanks for all the help, everyone, much appreciated.

PS : Meh, no worries CC :D
