View Full Version : Gears of Wars hands-on: Multiplayer

May 10, 2006 - Crouched behind the burnt shell of an old sedan, I was hiding for my life. Around me, my teammates were being slowly eliminated one by one by COG forces. Peaking over the hood of the car, I was able to lay down just a second of suppressing fire before a COG soldier popped up and started suppressing me. Bang. All three of my teammates are dead, and two COG soldiers are darting in and out of cover, honing in on me. I see one going for high ground and a rocket launcher. I switch to my sniper rifle and zoom in on the second story of a building a hundred feet away. Then his little human head pops into view and I put a bullet in it. Now it's me, an evil Locust foot soldier, against some other guy on the local area network, the hero of Gears of War (http://xbox360.ign.com/objects/747/747891.html), Marcus of the COG. Before I can celebrate my kill and look for my last enemy, I hear the most dreaded sound in Gears multiplayer: the chainsaw. While I was busy sniping, this guy had zipped in and out of cover and circled around me. My own blood spattered about as my Locust soldier fell to the ground dead.

I downloaded the latest HD trailer last night and though I'm pretty anti-console, I can see this being one of the killer games for Xbox360. Heck, something like this makes even me consider buying a console!
Do eeet Xan, do eeeet! Xbox Live is amazing. I am grabbing all my E3 content of Xbox marketplace and yes, GOW looks amazing. :)

Xbox Live is amazing.
Aha, but it sounds like MS is planning to integrate PC and Xbox360 Live! Take that consoles!
;)
Ummm, that will make the X360 even better fool! :)
Seriously though, I am very impressed. The Xbox Live Marketplace has just about every E3 HD trailer available, and even has a couple of E3 game demos available like Test Drive Unlimited, Lost Planet and MotoGP2006. That and of course Live Arcade where the Uno card game just got released. :) Mortal Kombat 3, Street Fighter 2, Contra and Sonic classic to follow soon.
With ole Bill saying himself that South Africa is next in line (at E3), I fully expect a local release at end-2006.
Would it seem strange if I were to get an XBox360 as well as a PS3?
:P

nope, but can we hate you for it?
Hehe, actually then your will be a diehard gamer. Just throw a Wii in there too. :p
For me personally, there is nothing on PS3 I want including MGS4 and GT5, and for R5000? No thanx.
Some more GOW goodness: http://media.xbox360.ign.com/media/747/747891/vids_1.html
pfffffffft PS3 farts in XBOX 360's general direction:P
Yes, because farting is all it can do. :p
For me personally, there is nothing on PS3 I want including MGS4 and GT5, and for R5000? No thanx.
I hear Take2 are selling the 360 for R4600... I guess you won't be getting one after all then? :P
Here's the thing.
I watched the Microsoft Conference at E3 and was amazed at GOW. Astounding game. Not just graphics but all the dynamics. The way he shoots over wall, ducks around corners... amazing.
I want an X360.
I've got the Sony Conference (Need to watch it).
I'll watch that and then want a PS3.
I'm downloading the Nintendo conference.
I'll watch that and then want a Wii.
So all in all I will be completely broke.
HALO 3 LOOKS LIKE THE SHIZ BTW!!!
The trailer is awesome.
Shrimp,
I got my X360 for R3999 at Prophecy. They had to increase the price to R4299 for now, but it is still the cheapest you can get it locally apart from importing yourself. They are also continuesly busy negotiating shipping fees, so it might drop back to R3999 before too long.
For a second, forget about direct Rand/Dollar rates and remember import duties, VAT, insurance and shipping. Given the history of consoles, you get about a 10:1 ratio, Rand / Dollar. The current PS2 price is $120, our price R1200. The cube is $99, our price R1000. Same holds true for the PSP, DS and just about any other console and handheld before it.
Given that, the $399 price tag of the Xbox360 works out to R4000 here, the price I got it for.
If the same formula holds true, the PS3 will land at R5000 and R6000 respectively for the 2 versions. Definately more than I am willing to fork out.
Crash,
Did you download those little IGN soundless, kakka resolution videos I linked above? That game really looks like a lot of fun and definately a system seller. Also make sure to check out Too Human, Lost Planet, Mass Effect and even the new Sonic.
All I can say is, you won't be dissapointed with the X360.
In the end, the PS3 and X360 will be very well matched in performance, so buying on specs is silly. Buy the system with the games you want. For now, I am playing X360 games 6 months before others even get their hands on the PS3, and like I mentioned, there is nothing on there I want.
There are at least 50 SA gamers on Live as we speak, so this system is selling even as a grey import and ole Mr. Gate confirmed South Africa will see the Xbox next, propably by year end locally.
Well to be honest all the new consoles look amazing, wouldnt mind one of each:(
