The final stages of the UT2K4 competition should be a lot less pre-determined than the Counter-Strike. This year there are four players with a chance of making it to the winner's podium.

42::Mburr
Karl "Mburr" Buys is South Africa's very own Fatal1ty, but thankfully not because he inserts a "1" randomly into his nickname. Mburr has won tournaments in three different games (Tribes 2, UT2003 and Doom 3) - a feat which no other local gamer can claim to have achieved. His skill in UT2K4 derives mainly from his raw FPS ability. Mburr picks up new games more quickly than any other player I've met, and this is testament to his natural talent. The only drawback is that he's generally unconcerned with pro-gaming and so doesn't put in nearly enough practice.

q6.Zero-1
By far the hardest working UT2K player in South Africa, one would feel that Jonathan "Zero-1" Attwell deserves a win after two years of finishing second and third. However, since he has yet to win a final match, this is a huge psychological barrier to overcome. Whether or not he can pull it off this time, I can't say for sure. His online play is looking particularly sharp, but as we all know, online is not LAN.

42::Gandulf
It feels rather strange that this is the first time I'm writing about this guy. Rikus "Gandulf" Jordaan has been around since the dawn of competitive gaming, and has finished top 3 in virtually every competition he entered. However, he's been on a bit of a real-life sabbatical and hasn't competed in almost three years. All hail the return of the true veteran. Gandulf doesn't take gaming the slightest bit seriously, and that's what makes him so dangerous.

42::Mielie
Otherwise known as The Sama (Japanese for The Boss), Nico-Louis "Mielie" Joubert became only the second South African player to advance out of his group during the World Cyber Games in San Francisco last year. On the local front, he has won every UT2K tournament he entered. An interesting bit of trivia: Mielie originally chose his nickname so that his opponents would underestimate him. He loves being the underdog. No luck there this time :P

The Verdict
While the final match will probably be a razor's edge, nail-biting three-mapper, it would be foolish to predict the eventual winner as anyone other than Mielie. He simply has too much experience, and he won the finals last year far too easily. Mburr is still the only player he loses to on a regular basis, and if it isn't Mburr with him in the final, it's probably game over from the start. Mburr hasn't been the most consistent player over the past year, but if he has an "on-day", he could pull it off. At last year's WCG qualifier his game looked shaky, resulting in his disappointing fourth place, but his head seems to be in the right place at the moment. Judging Zero-1's skill is always difficult (with him being in Cape Town), but since he no longer has a duel partner of Ph4ntom's calibre, I don't see him being on the same level as he was last year. Nevertheless, he has definitely put in more practice than the other three combined, and this will be the chance for him to really prove himself. Finally, Gandulf is the unmistakeable dark horse of the tournament, also capable of winning the whole thing. He has too much respect for Mielie though, and this will hinder him if he reaches the final.

Seems u have to have a few requirements to make it into the top3 in his predictions, these seem to be:

1: u must have a 42:: before ur nick
2: u must have a 42:: before ur nick
3: u must have a 42:: before ur nick

looks like comming top3 for the last couple events just isn't good enough :(

and for the record ph4ntom and i avoided each other like the plauge cause we were so competetive and ended up playing more q3 b4 wcg quallies than ut2004...

I'm not fussed really, its the same every year. CPT gamers allways get the raw end of the deal. Oh well, should be another 33 to -3 "miss prediction" on anton's behalf again.

Mburr has been to a grand total of one practise this entire year and probably won't be at any more, and Nautilian's entry also shakes things up a bit. The top 5, I believe,will be very close.
