View Full Version : Xbox 2 to be unveiled on MTV on May 12th

Microsoft's next-generation Xbox console is set to be unveiled to the world not at E3, as was previously believed, but in a half-hour long special to be aired on MTV the week previously, on May 12th.
The move is a massive break with tradition on Microsoft's part, and will get the Xbox 2 in front of consumers several days ahead of the unveiling of Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Revolution in Los Angeles the following week.
quite a clever move by MS and it looks like their marketting team will be giving sony a run for its money this time around.

They should keep this up. Pretty soon youl have to upgrade consoles more frequently than PC's and our servers will be full again.
The Xbox got launched in late 2000, so I don't get how 5 years later qualify as upgrading consoles more than PCs, but ok... :)
If MS SA release it locally this time, I will definately get myself one.
I just checked the DSTV schedule for 12 May, but I think MTV Europe (what we get) is out of luck. Maybe they'll update it closer to the time again. I would really like to watch it.
I see your point but I was thinking of how long the PS1 lasted think it would put it to shame - Playstation!!! Fo-eva!!!
Nway xbox controls suck and they use pwetty gwafix to sell there games, something the mighty PS dont need to do not to mention the new cell processors they will be incorporating in their new consoles.
Anybody got links to some pics? or is it still a closely guarded secret. Was actually considering getting a PS2 again but now im being put of.
Sneaky, have you played on an Xbox or just reciting what the anti-Xbox crowd says? I can vouch for the Xbox as being a very competitive console vs. the PS2 with games and exclusives on par unless your defence is OMG!!! Gran Turismo4 > OWNZ @LL!!!!?!?!
I wanted to grab a PS2 this weekend, but apparently the PS3 will be announced on May16 too...

there are alternatives to the default XBox controls you know :p and this statement right here "they use pwetty gwafix to sell there games" means u dont know what you're on about :P just look @ the XBox exclusive titles & you'll see the gems present on the machine. oh wait, it is the most powerful console out there so maybe it can brag wrt gfx if it wants to... :P

Power is one thing knowing how to use it is quite another :P I gues they made that statement because of their 1337 gfx card that the other consoles lack. I dont see why I have to fork out a couple of grand and then have to go buy other controls just because the standerd ones suck. I have played XBOX I dont like it because of mainly the controls and secondly because its made by Microsoft and a few other things. It did saden me when it got release and some old PS1 titles that I liked vey much went over, do they even have there own games exept for Halo?

No I mean the have 1 single exclusive that was not previously PS. ill keep a open mind when the next one gets released, they might redeem themselves but I dunno.

The ps3 is going to run with cell processing, screw the pc-wannabe xbox2. Nintendo consoles have the greatest games if you look at play- and lastability.
You guys are obviously so blind to any competition to Sony, that you'd much rather pretend that there is none. All rumours point to Xbox2 based on PowerPC processors, made by IBM. Yes, the same IBM that is doing Sony's Cell processor for the PS3. So no, it is not just a pc-wannabe this round. MS will have ATI aboard, Sony nVidia.
Latest reports from GDC (Game Developers Conference) points out that the Xbox2 have 3 processors with 3 cores each. That is 9 cores for those bad with maths.
On last count, the PS3 were to have 8 Cell cores, so excuse me while I don't just blindly believe Sony's miracle with 'cell'
It might very well be that Sony have the superior console this round, but I am willing to bet that is will be a VERY VERY tough battle.

You forget that the Xbox2 will be released 6 months before the PS3. That 6 months will be ample for solid market penetration and I am willing to bet - the reason we will see it in SA.

I may be wrong here but I've got a question: who will import the games for the xbox2? No one imported the xbox or its games because the major entertainment companies (ster kinekor + nu metro) are behind Sony. Microsoft will import their hardware and games but they won't import software from other manufacturers. This is a big concern I've got with the new xbox as I don't think playing Halo 3 & 4 for 5 years is going to be much fun.

Megarom already have a small supply line for current Xbox games, but because of the lack of hardware, don't sell it to retailers. I am sure we will get all flavours of games from local distros (who remembers the Xbox games EA released locally back in the day?)
The reason MS never bothered with the Xbox was because the market was already satisfied with both PS2 and Gamecube being on the market first locally. This time however, tables are turned.
Im a PS2 addict but ill definately welcome the Xbox2 on our shores, especially for the next Halos, Forzas, Jade Empire etc. Just hope they keep their games exclusive. Apparently they are changing the Xbox controls this time...the small white n black buttons are gonna become extra shoulder buttons like the ps2. And i think its one processor with 3 cores, not 3x3. As for Nintendo, they can stay in kindergarten.

hmm imo consoles are best for arcade-like games. I got myself a ps2 recently and mortal Kombat deception and gta san andreas. Nobody ever talks about mortal Kombat and praises gta, but the graphics are so terrible (after having played vice city on pc) I havent touched it in a month now. Whereas MK is always fun, because graphics just dont matter. My experience so far is that consoles are a good way of wasting time if there is nothing else to do, while playing on a pc is fun. Each to his own thou right...
