I never really took my gaming TOO seriously, but Ive always had the urge to see just how good i actually was. Unfortunately, I cannot afford a good connection at home so I'm forced to be a LAN player. Ive always fancied myself a bit of a dab hand at UT since UT99 and even now with UT2K4 and when I read Superman's UT guide in the Training section, it really opened my eyes.I was glad that there were a few aspects that I had known about, like predicting opponents' moves, knowing what type of player u r ( & therefore what type of weapons to use ) and also how to adjust your style of play.

The most obvious thing that I had never done until reading the article, was Shield and DamAmp timings. I actually tried it out against a Godlike bot yesterday and it makes a massive difference! The only thing Im struggling with, is when im trying to keep track of the +50 shield, the +100 shield AND the DamAmp simultaneously, I often get confused with the timing of all of them together.

I suppose thinking of a certain route will help with timing but that will come with practice I guess. So is the ultimate trick, then, wrt timing, being able to keep track of all the important things and, if they're not there, adjust your timing to a rough time based on the estimated time u thought it would be there and the current time (assuming your opponent beat u 2 the punch )?

No, don't ever follow a 'certain route' to help with the timing. You will just become a predictable powerup grabber that could be ambushed every time.

Personally I find that grabbing the shield, checking your clock, and fragging as normal works best. Then just be at the right spot next time. :)

So then the ideal would be 2 go about ur business, and then mayb 10 secs b4 the respawn, make sure ur on ur way back?

11 Apr 2005, 09:47
yup, the idea is to know, like in ironic, it takes say 10 secons to get from flak to 100, so whenu get to 10 seconds before, make your way back. Just beware, if you are playing another good player, he will also be makig his way back, or camping the shield waiting to ambush you. So enter the room on the defensivem, expecting to meet some1.

It takes you 10 seconds on ironic?! With what ? the walk key ?!

You got is Snake! :)

Spectate some matches and check how the good players are always there when the armor appears.

Haja']it takes say 10 secons to get from flak to 100

was an exmaple. It takes me 1.396 seconds to get there, and thats with killing 5 ppl alont the way, and getting the 5 vials under the ramp :P

I also noted, mayb its just me, but are some maps easier to control than others?Cos i found Ironic was a DREAM floating between the +50 shield, to the Flak, to the +100 shield, to the Shock and back to the +50. Not necessarily in that same order but I found that those were the 4 main items i was concentrating on. Whereas, on say, Deck 17 it was really hard 2 keep track of the shields (i think mayb cos of the stages size?) and Asbestos was also a bit of a mission cos of trying to keep track of the DamAmp and shields cos with only 2 ppl Asbestos suddenly seems rather beeeg!

You don't have to get EVERYTHING. Skip the 50 armor in favour for the DD, or the DD in favour for the 50. It is good to try and get it all, but if all you do is collect powerups and not actually kill anyone, you have another problem :)

do "official" duels still have the DD in them?

Gamos

No

Yet another reason Dueling sucks. They should make the DD and 100 spawn at the same time.

that would make the dd even easier to time thou, and its such a powerful item, it should be hard. On the other hand it would always make sure that the one person gets the armour and the other the dd. Now is that a good thing? That way its completely balanced and you might aswell have neither dd nor shield. hmm...

I like Sneaky's idea, and it would not always mean that one person would get shield and one would get DD, since they may go for the same thing at the same time.

The other dynamic is that the DD is time limited in usefulness, while the shield is not. That would make for an interesting chase scene / hide - and - seek game as the Damage Amp whore tries to get the most bang for his buck, so to speak, while the shield hobo tries to weather the storm! :D

Simple matter of cause and effect. Good behaviour = no problem. Bad behaviour = problem.

Ok sure, he's a dirty bastard etc but the article he posted changed the WHOLE way I look at UT2K4. That rarely happens. What he did with the whole clan thingie didnt affect me so I find it a little harder to just add him to my basket of i-hate-u ppl.

Yo Peeps,

have u ever heard the saying

I think that disabling stuff like Shields and DD removes some of the game's "feel", if u will. It is elements like these that actually makes UT2K4 UT2K4. If u remove this, we might as well play ne old primitive FPS. I even maintain this view on *gulp* adrenaline. It's DIFFERENT. It adds some fun, something different etc.

DD was used in competitive duels throughout the UT2k3 days, but was abolished with 2k4 as there was general consensus among the top players that it was making things too random. Also, it made the game all about timing, with less emphasis on actual "play skill". Personally, I agree with the decision, but there are good arguments for and against. It's just the majority rule, I guess.

Somehow I highly doubt that...

14 Apr 2005, 00:20
yep, because getting some frags in warmup doesnt really mean alot, as you always spawn with 200 health. So people that say they are no good at duels but good in warmup think that it is because no one times in warmup and you always have weapons, but its the health.

The problem is....the DD is too powerfull, one person can control the DD too easily and makes for boring duel...howeva in a DM its different, you have many players.
