It's official, 8 different flavors of Windows Vista

http://www.9down.com/images/topics/Windows_Vista.gif
Because choices are good? Or because there would be more money to be milked? Perhaps the victims of having 8 different flavors of Windows Vista are the software vendors, who would have to explain the differences between each edition to their customers.
Here's a quick rundown of the 8 product editions:

Windows Starter 2007 - This edition does not include the Aero graphical user interface, hence it’s not Vista-branded. And there’s no 64-bit edition, no networking, no Fast User Switching, no DVD Authoring, no gaming common controller support, and no image editing with enhanced touchup, and only three applications/windows are allowed to run simultaneously. Good only for really basic users with low budgets.

Windows Vista Home Basic - This is the true baseline version of Windows Vista; think Windows XP Home Edition. You can expect to find features such as Windows Firewall, Windows Search, Photo Library and etc. And every other edition below will be based on this edition. Good for general consumers or even the kids.

Windows Vista Home Basic N - Same as the Home Basic Edition, but minus the Windows Media Player. This edition is for the Europeans as they have antitrust rulings against Microsoft which does not allow the player to be bundled.

Windows Vista Home Premium - This edition includes features such as Media Center Extender support, Cable Card support, DVD authoring and Tablet PC functionality. This edition is best suited for notebooks and networked home desktops, but it’s probably insufficient for the geeks.

Windows Vista Business - Analogous to the Windows XP Professional, this will probably be the most widely used edition in corporate environments. This edition allows joining of domains, non-Microsoft networking (Netware, etc), Remote Desktop and Microsoft Windows Web Server. Most geeks and IT professionals will want to go for this edition.

Windows Vista Business N - Just like Home Basic N Edition, this one is meant for the Europeans and comes with no media player.

Windows Vista Enterprise - This edition will come with several new features such as Virtual PC, multi-language user interface (MUI) and Secure Startup (BitLocker Drive Encryption).

Windows Vista Ultimate - This one is going to be the most expensive, most feature-packed, and perhaps the most pirated edition of Vista. It’ll include new and unique features such as Game Performance Tweaker, Podcast creation utility, online “Club” services and privileged product support. This edition will be perfect for Windows fanboys.

So which one’s for you?

I doubt is will be 100% official `till MS announce it, but I am pretty sure that is as close as we will get.

So the game performance tweaker is only in the Ultimate (uber expensive) version? Sigh! They better price these things well, because I would hate to see a larger price tag than WinXP Pro.

MMmm, did you buy XP pro seperately?

Eish it usually comes bundled with a new pc or laptop.

RadeonOmega Catalyst Drivers will provide gamers with an alternate set of drivers, ones that have more options and features than the original sets. The drivers contain optimizations, extra features (like OC capabilities), more resolutions and internal tweaks that can give them the edge in a gaming enviroment over the normal drivers, which are often tailored for synthetic benchmarks. All Omega driver sets are tested to ensure maximum compatibility and reliability.

It is easy to use; all you have to do is download and install it, and from then on many Web pages will automatically load faster than before. Google Web Accelerator is currently optimized to speed up web page loading for broadband connections. Google Web Accelerator uses various strategies to make your web pages load faster, including: Storing copies of frequently looked at pages to make them quickly accessible; Downloading only the updates if a web page has changed slightly since you last viewed it; Prefetching certain pages onto your computer in advance; Compressing data before sending it to your computer.

Hi guys,

Guys what software can I use to limit bandwidth on devices.

Practical application

Would like to put in a wireless adsl access point in our guest cottage but obviously do not want a nifty guest to reach our cap for us. So offer the point but at a limit for our protection.

The best idea I thought was to bind the software to the MAC address of the access point in the cottage.

Run-of-the-mill bandwidth monitors wont work so please any ideas ??

thanks,

Peon.

Netlimiter (http://www.download.com/NetLimiter/3000-2071_4-10227459.html) i think that might do it

Hmm

Thanks max. I tried NetLimiter and Softperfects' Bandwidth Monitor. The problem is for those to work you need a server. All pc's connect directly to the modem(Theres no middle pc). There is no space to pop in a server nor would it be practical.

One would have to move to modem but then it would not give good wireless reception + a 10m telephone cable would be needed. All of which would make a nice nest of a mess.:banghead: The router does not include any limiting capabilities.

Eish this is a tricky one.....

Whilst we're talking about new things...

I had the opportunity to see Vista in action last year when Steve Ballmer came out to South Africa. I'm sure most of you have played with the beta builds, but to me it seems as if MS has borrowed a lot from Mac and even Linux to bring this OS together.

Also, last weekend I got the chance to play with the new XBox 360. Neat piece of hardware. I reckon it'll beat the PS3. Release in South Africa hinted at end of September.

Google Page Creator Updated

http://www.9down.com/images/topics/google.gif
Google Page Creator currently enables Google Account holders to create single pages, with up to 100MB of storage (http://www.9down.com/story.php?sid=6252#). The company provides a free URL (http://www.9down.com/story.php?sid=6252#) at http://username.googlepages.com to access the pages a user creates. Google says Page Creator does not currently support making full "sites" of content.
Creating a page using the service requires just a few mouse clicks, and although it's still an early beta release, industry analysts and pundits say it already shows promise.

"From the Page Manager, click on the title of the page you want to edit. This will take you to the Page Editor. Once you've clicked into your page, just start typing in the text boxes (http://www.9down.com/story.php?sid=6252#)," explains Google. "On the left side of the page are tools to: change the size and style of your text, create links, and insert images."

Different layouts can be selected through a sample gallery, along with "page looks" that provide color and style options. Images can also be uploaded and inserted into pages.
You can use up to 100MB of space for your pages and uploaded files

Windows Live Messenger 8.0.0566 released

http://www.9down.com/images/topics/messenger.png
By now most of you should be aware that build 566 has been released and is being automatically updated for everyone on the beta. If you are using build 562 you are also aware of a bug with the automatic update where it continually asks you to updated but you are still left with build 562.

Here is the work-around:
1. Uninstall build 562 by going to Control Panel -> Add Remove Programs and removing "Messenger Beta"
2. After uninstalling it may appear that you still have Messenger installed, if that is the case try signing in and let the automatic update kick in. Proceed with the automatic update and install. After installing, you should now have build 566.
3. If you were able to fully uninstall build 562 during step one you can download build 566 from below :

It's quite disappointment that 4.0 which claimed it should work on x64 OS but it didn't work. This time it wouldn't disappoint you since I tested the method and it can finally by-pass 32-bit redirection system. Grab the world first 32-bit patcher that works on x64 OS today!

What's new in version 5.0

-Added x64 compatibility
-Fixed x64 detection problems
-Removed useless already patching detection which causes conflicts

Something for the nvidea fan boys. . .

A while back Asrock published a SLI enabling patch for their ULi chipset based motherboards that have two PCI-Express slots. Various rumors suggested that the patch would also function under other chipsets as well, and allow users with other chipsets to use SLI on their non-SLI motherboards. Unfortunately the original version of the patch installs only on ULi 1695/7 chipsets - you couldn’t use it if you didn’t have a motherboard with that particular chipset.
We’ve managed to rip the installer and to create a modified version of the SLI patch that allows you to use it with EVERY motherboard. We couldn’t do in-depth testing on other chipsets, but if the rumors are true then it should definitely work. Feel free to use it at your own risk, and please post the results in our forums. Remember, this is a modified version and is not supported by Asrock, ULi or Nvidia.

Installation: Just run SLI Patch.exe and follow the instructions. After the installation, restart pc TWICE.
Removal: Control Panel > Add and Remove programs > SLI Patch
Supported OSes: Microsoft Windows XP/2000

ATI Catalyst 6.3

http://www.9down.com/images/topics/ati.jpg
They have also integrated a new 'Anti-Leeching' system into their website, so unfortunately you have to visit their site to find the appropriate package. We can't even link to the release notes directly. Again, those of you looking for a complete driver package without the .NET based control package are out of luck. There is however a standalone driver package, which only contains the 6.3 drivers but no control set for Windows.
