I was just wondering who agrees that south africa needs an autobahn, it sucks having to drive cars ment for speeds well over 120, under 120.

I have heard a story about a huge company actually surveying South Africa for that exact same thing, but that it was decided that South Africans can't drive, propably due to the taxis etc. Can you imagine a taxi doing 80km/h getting a free ride in the autobahn?

Other countries also managed to set up a working bus sytem, with regulated bus plans and stops. If you tell me that you are willing to accept the minibus taxis as a successful part of the infrastructure, visit a first world country. A taxi is something great, its a job and so is a bus as such, but these guys are roadhogs.

Dominate, I noticed from driving on the Autobahn in Germany that you need 2 basic things to make them work: firstly you need all of the cars on the road to be good quality cars with good performance, and secondly, you need drivers that match the cars.

Germans drive good cars and they drive them well. (They ship all their old cars to Poland and Turkey.)

The majority of South Africans drive mobile chicken coops (with actual chickens in them) and have bought their licences, which they can't read because their too drunk. (A previous member of parliament comes to mind.)

I reckon its asking for trouble to drive at speeds in excess of 200km/h on roads shared by drivers, pedestrians and livestock, all of equal sophistication.

The autobahn only works because they have a cell-distance method of opperation and cameras that watch it. If you follow a car too closely, you get fined.

The same might work in SA - except our roads are not up to the standard, thats the whole bloody reason for the speed limits. The camber of the road and surface shaping is calculated and designed for certain speeds and friction and even reaction time.

ok this is how it happened,my dad bought a merc, and on the showroom floor was a E55 AMG, so my dad asked the rep if he could test drive it, so they set up a date, when the time came and my dad was test driving it, the rep asked me if i had a licence and she said i could drive home, i wasnt the one racing against the 1100 or going 200, fastest i did was bout 160

Lol, i was driving on the autobahn on one of the many parts that have no speed limit the other day and thought I was fast going 185 (absolute max i can make :D), when i spotted a yellow rocket in my rear mirror. Quickly moved on to the right side and past me shot a ferrari sounding like an aeroplane, he was gone as fast as he came, i can only imagine how fast he was :/

well if u look at the states, not that ive ever been there, have a friend that has, he says all you see is yellow (taxis) but those are the civilized kind, well, more than in SA

HAHAHAHA! At one stage I was sitting in the SLOW LANE at 170km/h with people in the middle lane coming past me like I was looking for parking.

In SA the BMW drivers are normally quite the speedsters, in Germany I noticed mostly Mercedes as being the fastest non-sports cars coming past me, especially all the AMG models, both Petrol and Diesel. The other noticeable low-flyers were the Porsche Cayenne SUV's. Ze Germans also have access to 98 unleaded fuel. Yummy!

Nope. I'm from right here. I have friends in Stuttgart that I visit every year, sometimes twice a year.

You should see the Merc HQ in Stuttgart (Untertürkheim). WOW! It's a city on its own. They have their own suburbs and their own dedicated offramps off the freeways etc. including a football stadium.

i wish SA could come even close to that, i have german friends who live here and they subscribe to german car magasines, the cars that are produced for germany, i couldnt even dream of seeing, there are so many models that dont even get mentioned in SA

Yup, you see LOTS of yellow taxis, but they are mainly in cities, and in the close surrounding areas.

In USA the drivers are excellent, they obey the speedlimit (well, the mojority) are very courteous, and all in all drive well. And yes, I do know tis, I drove around the USA for 3 months, before some smartass asks how I know this :P

Autobahn here would never work cos of most of the beat up cars south africans drive. Most south africans don't maintain our cars well enough. I think raise the limit to 160

We should be happy with what we have Australia and the US have allready brought speed limits down too 100Km/h on freeways and 50Km/h in suburban areas + they "can" actually enforce it...it made me insane.

Removing the speed limits would be a very, very stupid thing to do in this country. Doing 120km/h and coming around a corner at night behing a truck with no working lights doing 60km/h is bad enough. Doing 250km/h and coming across the same thing is instant roadkill.

On second thought it might get rid of all those prick BMW drivers, they would kill themselves off pretty quickly...

Whats the point of creating an Autobahn when you can't even do the speed limit half the time, on the highways we have.

You have the left hand lane which no one uses, why I don't know. Maybe it has ebola. People would rather sit in the middle lane blocking up the traffic.
You have the middle lan which has morons driving anywhere between 60 and 100 kph.
Then the right hand lane which can have cars travelling between 10 and 180kph.

OR you have a truck in the left hand lane, and one in the middle lane dicing each other up a hill. And half the planet in the right hand trying to get past them.....

Why is it that a 4 ton or 40 ton truck licence is easier to get than getting a k53 licence?
If you are driving a 40 ton truck you should really be better at driving than a normal driver.
In South Africa we give fucktards a 40 ton killing machine and wonder why so many people get killed on the roads???
