VirtualDub (http://www.virtualdub.org/) is what you're looking for.

Have a look through these sites. They should be more than enough.
http://www.doom9.org
http://www.divx-digest.com/ (main site)
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/index3.html#encoding_conv (converting section)
I've used these successfully:
http://www.winavi.com/
http://www.zealotsoft.net/
Isn't virtualdub just good for going MPG->AVI ?
Why exactly do you want to convert to MPEG 1/2 though? And what hardware are you using it on, video DOES take quite a bit of proccessing, so it might be that 10FPS is all you can get for certain resolutions/settings.
QUEnc works lekka, but you need some knowledge of AVS scripting.
TMPGenc worked well the last time I tried it, there's also a free version out now, but haven't gotten a chance to try it yet.
doesnt windows mediaplayer do that too?
uhm
For virtual dub
Video -> Compression -> xVid *click*
Whats the problem?
AVI is just a container, its still an MPEG2.

oh, well i think im just gonna leave it. its too much effort, i started converting a file last night and when i woke up this morning it was only on 50% and had already used 3gigs.
i mainly wanna copy my home videos, which are avi on my pc to DVD, and yesterday when i tried it it said avi wasnt a compatible format for my DVD disk.

i use D.I.K.O to convert mine
they go from avi to vob in one go
then u just write that to a dvd disc
if u want menu's and stuff u need to make
the whole thing with a dvd movie making editor thingie
of wich i use the software that came with my writer "nero vision express"
